1.I have nothing personal against the people I criticize here
2. I am not writing this post just because I`m from a Defence background
3. I am not writing this article because I am a Male Chauvinist Pig(I dont think I am one anyways)..
Now, here`s the point..The IAF vice-chief made some comments about how the idea of inducting women fighter pilots is currently not under consideration. He also made some points about how much the govt. spends on training a fighter pilot and how a women fighter pilot deciding to settle down and have kids will lead to wastage of government money. Now,here`s the kicker....I always had a feeling, and I am sure most of us did, that intellectuals be damned, newspaper editorial content does depend on what the people want to hear or atleast the media company`s owners think they want to hear. But I had no idea that our supposedly highly-educated intellectuals, also known as editors, can stoop so low just so that they write something they/their bosses think the public will like to read.
I am making 2(hopefully valid) assumptions here:
1. These "editors" are writing such stuff because of commercial constraints(If they seriously believe in what they write, there is nothing weirder left to believe).
2. They think the public wants to read this, but actually most of the people don`t since they are sensible enough(Well...even if they aren`t ,we know who to blame for that)
Both the leading newspapers tried to outdo each other by writing editorials which predictably flayed the IAF vice-chief and championed the feminine cause(Hurray to women`s emancipation). The articles contained arguments such as even men become fathers, why are they allowed to become fighter pilots then? One of these articles had a very gung-ho feel about it with the writer uring the women to go ahead and snatch the fighter planes they have every right to fly.
Now, this is totally preposterous. Giving arguments such as why are fathers allowed to fly fighter planes is like shouting from the rooftops about one`s lack of common sense and general knowledge of biology. It is simply unbelievable that anyone in the right state of mind will compare the biological changes that happen in a female`s body due to pregnancy with anything a man`s body might go through. These arguments are so stupid that even if later in the article ,something genuinely sensible has been written, the article will be tarnished on the whole. No-one says that there can`t be objections as to what the vice-chief says but they could surely not be on the above-mentioned lines.
If one has to object, one can say :"If today you have women willing to sign a contract regarding abstention from pregnancy for a fixed period of time so as not to waste the govt. expenditure on training, why cant they be inducted as soon as possible? Why is this process not under consideration any time soon?"
Just came to know that the vice-chief has had to apologize for his remarks.Hmm...May better sense prevail!!
